November Speaker: Tim Fox -

Retail Manager, The Fly Shop,

and Master Fly Tyer

by Bob Marshak

Our November speaker was Tim Fox, who is currently the manager of the Fly Shop (Redding) and a master fly tyer.

Tim's program will feature some very popular and innovative flies he has created, including the Fox’s Caddis Poopah, which is a certified fish-catching machine. He will also be tying Fox’s Crowning Poopah (a caddis emerger), the Clown Egg (very useful this time of the year), and Mr. Fox's Skleech. If you would like to tie along with Tim, bring your tying materials. The recipes Tim will be tying are posted on the Club’s website (at this time, I don't have them yet to post. Jay). Tim will have some colorful stories about how the flies came to be and how he named them. He will also talk about insect behavior and how to fish the flies effectively. In addition, Tim will talk about some hot fishing areas in Northern California.

Tim grew up on the Sacramento River, outside of Corning. He started spin fishing very early and took up fly fishing at age 13. By the time he was 16, he was tying commercially for Powell Fly Shop in Chico, where he later worked. He and his brother drove all other Northern California and fished every stream they possibly could. Tim has built up an extensive knowledge of Northern California fisheries as well as other fisheries in the Western U.S. By his mid-20s he was working for the Fly Shop and he eventually worked his way up to his current position as manager of the shop.

Tim will tailor his program to appeal to fly tyers and non-tyers alike, so come one and come all for a very informative program.

June 8 , Wally Johnson Our June program features Wally Johnson, a steelhead guide operating as Seiad Valley Guide Service www.steelheadguides.com. Wally is synonymous with North Coast steelhead fishing. He lives right on the Klamath and has been guiding there for 22 years. He started flyfishing the river 15 years ago and he finds that the quickest way to cover water and figure out what’s happening on the river is to grab his flyrod and walk out his backdoor. Wally’s guiding business concentrates on the Klamath but his philosophy is to follow the fish and that brings him at times to the Smith, Eel, and Mattole rivers, as well. Wally’s presentation will cover steelhead fishing on the North Coast, including places, seasons, gear, and techniques. His presentation will tie in to the Club’s November steelhead outing to the Klamath. Many members of the Club have expressed a desire to learn more about steelhead fishing and to have occasional steelhead outings. Come to the June program and start getting hooked on steelhead fishing. Bob Marshak At our meeting this Thursday evening, in addition to Wally Johnson, Klamath River guide, we will also have the President/CEO of the Federation of Fly Fishers, Peter "Van" VanGytenbeek. Van will take about 15 minutes to bring us up to date on what the FFF is doing on our behalf and to answer any questions you may have about the FFF. Be sure to arrive at 7 pm so we can start the meeting a little earlier than usual.

March 9, Speaker – Bill Carnazzo Bill Carnazzo Fly Tying demonstration begins at 6:00 pm! from Bob Marshak As the new Education Officer, I am very pleased to announce that we have a great speaker for the March meeting. Bill Carnazzo, a resident of both Foresthill and Dunsmuir, is a guide, teacher, master fly tyer, and author, including a frequent contributor to the California Flyfisher magazine. Bill’s passion for flyfishing began nearly 50 years ago and he has fished many great waters. Bill’s program will cover a variety of interesting fisheries, near and far, including the Upper Sac in the winter, the Lower Sac, Labrador, Bailey Creek Lodge, and the North Yuba. In addition, Bill has generously agreed to do a fly tying demonstration prior to the program and a clinic on short-line nymphing following the main program. Bill will begin his tying demonstration around 6:00. You’ll want to be there for it, as Bill is a well-known tyer who regularly ties at fly fishing shows, most recently at the San Rafael show. He is a creator of innovative flies such as Bill’s Stick Caddis. http://www.billcarnazzo.com/

Fly Fishing California's National Parks in the Sierras by Steve Beck

This month we’re pleased to have as our speaker Steve Beck from Merced, who will present a slide show on fly fishing California’s National Parks. These include Yosemite, Lassen, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia; and Steve’s talk will help us understand where to fish in these four parks, when, and with what flies and tackle. His slides will also reveal a sampling of the spectacular scenery to be enjoyed by the adventurous fly fisher in the mountains and meadows of these renowned parks. Steve is the author of two fine books on this subject: Trout Fishing the John Muir Trail and Yosemite Trout Fishing Guide. He will have copies of these books available for purchase at the meeting, and he has offered to donate a selection of his own flies to our raffle. Those of us who have fished in any of these parks, or have contemplated doing so, will find Steve’s presentation to be an invaluable aid. We will not only have a better idea of how to fish those waters we may already be familiar with, but will learn about new ones among the hundreds of lakes and thousands of miles of streams in these beautiful National Parks. So make it a point to be at the Kensington Community Center, 59 Arlington Ave. FREE and open to the public. See you there.  Sponsored by Grizzly Peak Flyfishers
