SUNOL COMPOST DUMP MEETING
Alameda Creek tour April 23
To the Alameda Creek Alliance e-mail list:
1) SUNOL COMPOST DUMP MEETING TOMORROW NIGHT A final reminder about the most critical phase of the fight against locating the Alameda County compost dump in the Sunol Valley: PLEASE COME TO THE ACWMA BOARD MEETING THIS WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26, at 6:00 P.M. at the SUNOL VALLEY GOLF COURSE (Andrade Road west of 680). This is an opportunity for the public to address the Alameda County Waste Management Authority Board and ask questions on the Organics Processing Development Project. The coalition of Stop the Dump in Sunol, Save Our Sunol and Alameda Creek Alliance will have 1/2 hour to make a presentation. Members of the public may speak for 1-3 minutes at the discretion of the Chair, without ceding of time. It is important to show that the community supports a composting facility but does not want this dump located in Sunol. No formal action will be taken at this meeting, but the ACWMA vote on the facility is May 24! Please wear red to the board meeting! Contact DJVANDERA@aol.com with any questions about the meeting or the proposed dump or visit http://www.stopthedumpinsunol.org/
2) CREEK PROTECTION ACTION ALERT Please contact your Alameda County Supervisor to support the Sierra Club’s proposed moratorium on development in creek corridors in Alameda County. The Sierra Club has made a significant breakthrough in their effort to protect riparian corridors in Alameda County. For 29 years the County has been out of compliance with a Specific Plan adopted for the designation and protection of riparian corridors and creeks throughout the County. At the Board of Supervisors meeting on May 4, Supervisor Nate Miley will propose a moratorium on any further development along riparian corridors until the County can determine how it will comply with this law. Supervisors Steele, Lai-Bitker and Miley have pledged to support this moratorium. Residents living in Supervisors Carson’s and Haggerty’s districts are needed to contact their Supervisor and urge approval of the Club request. The Sierra Club is asking for a County-wide moratorium, which would include unincorporated lands in the Alameda Creek watershed. The issue will come to the Board for a vote on May 4.
Take action by contacting your Supervisor – contact information and a sample message are below.
Sample message: "STOP THE BUILDING ALONG RIPARIAN CORRIDORS. LEAVE WILDLIFE SOME ROOM TO BREATHE. PLEASE VOTE YES ON A MORATORIUM ON ANY PROJECT NOT YET FULLY APPROVED."
