Steelhead back in lower Alameda Creek Steelhead trout were sighted today in lower Alameda Creek in the flood control channel. An attempt will be made later this week to capture these fish and move them upstream, under permit from state and federal regulatory agencies. This is the 9th consecutive winter we have documented adult steelhead attempting to move up Alameda Creek to spawn. For information about ongoing efforts to provide for permanent fish passage for steelhead and to check on the status of planned projects to get fish past migration barriers, visit the ACA web site (www.alamedacreek.org

Gather Signatures for Coyote Hills Natural Area Initiative – Trainings March 4 and 11 The Friends of Coyote Hills and Fremont is launching a citizen initiative aimed at preserving the lands surrounding Coyote Hills Regional Park and needs to collect 13,000 signatures by mid-May in order to qualify the Initiative for the November ballot. The Initiative will amend the City of Fremont General Plan to protect approximately 500 acres by designating the land for agriculture and will place additional safeguards on scenic views, creek corridors and sensitive wildlife habitat. The first training is Saturday, March 4 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Fremont Main Library, Van Doorn Room (left of the lobby), 2400 Stevenson Boulevard, Fremont PLEASE RSVP to Linda Ramus at lramus1995@sbcglobal.net or (510) 579-9995.  Public Hearing on Sunol Compost Facility March 14 A clarification on the final EIR for the Sunol composting facility - it has been released, but it has not yet been adopted by the Alameda County Waste Management Authority (ACWMA) Board, nor has the project been officially approved. Please contact your ACWMA Board representative (see http://www.stopwaste.org/home/index.asp?page=196 for a list of Board members) and your County Supervisor to speak out against siting the compost dump in Sunol, especially if you live in Sunol. There will be a series of public meetings for the ACWMA Board to review the EIR, the first of which will be in Sunol on March 14th, at the Sunol Valley Golf Course. See http://www.stopwaste.org/home/index.asp?page=10&recordid=933 for info about the meeting). This will be a great opportunity for people to speak out on this issue. Visit the Citizens for a Healthy Alameda County Environment (CHACE) web site (http://www.healthyacenvironment.org/ ) for more information about the compost dump issue.
